The Maya Brenner x Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation collaboration is comprised of two distinct jewelry collections, Virtues and Racine. Top: Maya Brenner (left) and Jessica Herrin are working together again after nearly a decade for a new Stella & Dot collection.Jewelry designer Maya Brenner has partnered with the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation to design a capsule collection. It allowed me to enjoy my creative side.… I just kept making jewelry for myself, and people started to react to my work.” It was the way I relaxed after my daily stress. “I was a social worker in New York, working full time and making jewelry on the side. ![]() “I’ve always designed for what I wanted to wear,” Brenner says. “You absolutely can mix metals, and I wanted a piece for people that said, ‘Here’s how.’ I wanted to give them the piece that could tie it all together.”īrenner is a noted jewelry designer in her own right, especially well-known for her asymmetrical letter necklaces and state pendants-one of the most popular being the Bi-Coastal necklace that represents New York with an apple shape and California with the state’s outline. There are no rules with jewelry,” Brenner says. “Having been in the business a long time, having the experience, and having a certain number of years on the planet, I know that anything goes. That translated to chunkier pieces as well as the mixed metals. ![]() There are two bracelets in an interlocking chevron pattern, one with a thicker chain and one that’s more delicate two necklaces, one with a tricolor chevron and the other with a pendant that is a curved arrow and two pairs of earrings, including one convertible set.īrenner says her design process for the collection started with her own jewelry, in that she looked to see what she was missing and what she felt like her legacy at Stella & Dot could include. The Maya Brenner x Stella & Dot collection has prices that range from $39 to $149 and includes gold- and silver-plated options. The Arrow Slider bracelet features gold plating and hand-set pave crystals ($99). “We’ve all been pulled back so much over the past few years, I felt like it was time to launch into what’s next.” Brenner says she hoped to bring her arrow symbol forward with this new Stella & Dot collaboration. But when you pull an arrow back to launch it, you hope it will go somewhere great,” Brenner says. An arrow isn’t always going to go straight or where you might expect. “I always want to create something with meaning, which means it has meaning especially to me. The arrow is a design that goes back to her roots, Brenner says. I wanted that spark again, to feel like I was at the beginning of something-and that’s how it felt back then with Jessica.” “It’s the right collaboration and the right design,” Brenner says. For the new collection, which launched last month, Brenner decided to add a curve to symbolize how life, with all its changes, requires you to bend with the times. (Photo courtesy of Stella & Dot)įor example, that arrow-shape On the Mark necklace was Brenner’s most iconic piece when she was head designer for Stella & Dot, from 2005 to 2013. The six-piece Maya Brenner x Stella & Dot collection features an update of Brenner’s iconic On the Mark necklace as well as new additions to her design aesthetic. ![]() Brenner says the six pieces in the Maya Brenner x Stella & Dot collection let the wearer mix and match with symbols such as Brenner’s favorite arrow shape that have an even deeper meaning in this current moment. Now, they’ve come back together for another collaboration in hopes of not only recapturing that original magic but building on it for a new collection. ![]() Their friendship and working relationship helped build Herrin’s Stella & Dot until the two went their separate ways nearly a decade ago. When Maya Brenner met Jessica Herrin in 2005, they instantly discovered they had a lot in common: Both women were new moms, both had young businesses, and both had a desire to have a long-lasting impact on the jewelry industry.īrenner was an independent jewelry designer at the time, but the idea of collaborating with Herrin on her pitch for a new company was thrilling, Brenner says. ![]() And that was before you started managing your private key and figuring out how to use the encryptions keys with your email client. In the past, using encryption required at least some familiarity with the command line, and it often took several tries to work properly. Telegram, meanwhile, uses a proprietary encryption scheme.Įven though encryption is far more complicated than it used to be, modern encryption apps are very easy to use. WhatsApp also uses Signal’s encryption protocol for its messaging. With so many permanent, temporary, and shared keys required to read a single message, it becomes much harder for a third party to read these messages without direct access to one of the user’s phones. On top of that, the temporary and permanent keys are combined (along with more fancy algorithms) to create additional shared secret keys between the two people communicating. The temporary keys are regenerated on a per-message basis to limit how much information would be exposed should the keys ever leak. Signal’s protocol, for example, uses a combination of permanent and temporary keys. The encryption schemes for messaging apps are now much more advanced than the original public-private key scheme. You use your friend’s public key to encrypt a message, and when they receive the garbled text, they use their private key to unscramble it. Then when you respond to the encrypted message, the same thing happens in reverse. Once it’s garbled, the only way to read an encrypted message is to use the private key. ![]() A computer can then use this public key along with an encryption algorithm (fancy math!) to garble the message. The public key is something that everyone can see and know about. In their most basic form, these keys come in pairs: a public key and a private key. Encrypted messaging: It’s all about the keys Anton (CC0)Įncrypted messaging uses a tool called “keys”-essentially long strings of letters and numbers. This can include meeting locations with friends, controversial opinions, your health status, vacation plans, and maybe even a credit card number or account password. But if you look through your texts and emails, you’ll likely come across a lot of information that you wouldn’t want others to know about. It may not seem like you have anything critical to hide. ![]() Only minimum specs are available now, so we don't yet know what sort of rig you'll need in order to get the intended experience of Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare on PC. The Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare page on Steam has been updated to show system requirements. I am not trying to compete with exploration sims or even the trading elements of Elite, but if I get the time and energy, those types of game play might get added iteratively -after the core game launches.Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare's minimum system requirements have been posted, and they're not too much of a problem. ![]() ![]() I haven’t figured out if I will go that way yet. As I develop the game one of the design decisions will be whether to place the campaigns within the freeplay universe and let the player come and go as they choose. The plan is that in the freeplay mode, the player can jump from system to system attacking the enemy and gaining control of new terrain for their faction. It will allow the player to conquer new places each time they play the game and will provide them with unique locations to craft their own space operas if they choose. So the procedural galaxy is a way to provide an expansive battle field for big fleet encounters. I loved how everything in GSB explodes as well. I wanted to play that game, but be able to control all the ships for real and zip around the action as a fighter pilot. For a long time I described the game as Gratuitous Space Battles from the cockpit perspective. I love the space action of Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica, and I wanted to recreate those epic battles with a player right in the middle. Truly I came to my game idea from a different angle. Where I think my game diverges from those games is that Space Warfare: Infinite is focused more on battles and less on exploration. The plan is to make the story line branch based on performance so the campaign will be dynamic with a few tracts towards a few endings. As the government’s go-to problem solvers, your battle group takes part in a bunch of these conflicts, seeing the war unfold in different ways. A war on multiple fronts breaks out for the coalition when some factions within the coalition use the opportunity to seize control. As the game unfolds, the background on the attacking alien race is revealed. Before this discovery can even be discussed, a full scale invasion is underway and the Omega Group must fight a series of daring missions to put a stop to the Coalition’s destruction. ![]() While dealing with internal strife plaguing the ever expanding ISC territory, your squadron encounters the scout of an invading enemy that hadn’t been seen in centuries. You are part of an elite battle group called the Omega Battle Group – a tested flotilla of ships sent in to end the toughest conflicts. Dolan, but you are going to need a story someday.” That said, I do have the start of the story for the beginning of the campaign – You are a pilot rising through the ranks of the Inner Systems Coalition navy. Badger Head Games’ very own, the man behind Space Warfare Infinite – Mike Dolan.įor a long time the story has been – you are in space, look at the nebula clouds, look lasers and explosions! Pew! Pew! One of my students recently remarked: “That’s all great Mr. The game is built with Unity and Blender, but instead of reading about my misconceptions of how 3D models are made we have a special guest that will shed some light over this and few other topics. And a feature that will set SWI apart from any other similar game on the market is exactly that – Mike is building a complete battle editor as well, that will allow players to alter almost every aspect of the game. Now imagine that concept in a procedurally generated galaxy – and tell me that you’re not impressed. As he stated himself, playing space games inspired him to build his own. If you are reading his BadgerHeadGames Dev Log you can find out which games inspired this, which ones he admires and plays. The influence of Elite on SWI is evident, and Mike references it on the regular. Hearing the term “space dogfight” is quite enough to get me interested but after finding out that players will be able to command massive ships, fighters and even combat entire fleets on maps (which they will also be able to create by themselves), I was ‘freaking out man’! It seems that the basic idea behind SWI is to combine all of our favorite concepts into one unique experience. ![]() However, for those drivers who aren’t so interested in how the car is doing what it’s doing but would rather it just got on with doing it well, the A250e might begin to disappoint. All A250es have mirroring for Android and Apple phones. That said, once you've adjusted to them the thumbpad scrollers on the steering wheel spokes work well and the navigation system responds well to voice commands once you learn the order in which it prefers destinations to be input. With the latest version of MBUX the firm has removed the touchpad input device, which isn't great news if you like to have physical controls instead of jabbing a screen. The navigating logic of the infotainment system is easy to get along with. A 225W ‘Mercedes advanced’ sound system is also included – something our test car had – and it has all the power most reasonable adults would want. High-spec models also gain its ‘augmented reality’ navigation prompts (which we thought gimmicky and borderline distracting at first but eventually warmed to a little). Initially, only higher-spec A250e models featured the top versions of the MBUX infotainment system, but now every model comes with twin 10.25in screens – for the infotainment and digital driver info display – as standard. Mercedes A-Class infotainment and sat-nav The top-spec trim is AMG Line Premium Plus, which adds a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree reversing camera, among other options. ![]() Even entry level models get sports seats and AMG-branded mats, while upgrading to AMG Line Premium adds advanced climate control, illuminated door sills and a 10-speaker audio system. The A250e is offered in only AMG Line Executive trim and upwards. But lower the rear seats – a fiddly process, given the controls to do so are located in the boot – and you'll have ample storage space. You're also prsented with a decent loading area, although the fixed boot does mean getitng larger objects in isn't as easy as it would be with a hatch. The packaging of the car’s batteries and power electronics does rob the saloon boot of some space, although there's still a decent amount of storage for a car of this class. The A250e’s interior is just like that of any other Mercedes-Benz A-Class. The ‘integrated’ front sports seat design means you don’t get separate, adjustable head restraints (although the A-Class isn’t the only offender on that score these days), while the oversized interior door handles eat into knee room a bit unnecessarily and can even trap your outboard leg if you’re not careful when closing the rear passenger doors. The cabin is a broadly practical and comfortable one, too, with a couple of familiar A-Class caveats. Mercedes claims a kerb weight of 1680kg, with the battery accounting for 150kg of that figure. And ignore the ridiculous official economy figure that is commong with most PHEV models: in the real-world, with careful planning of your hybrid power it’s easy to exceed 50mpg on motorway journeys.Īs for suspension, the A250e gets the MacPherson strut front and torsion beam rear configuration that appears on cheaper versions of the regular A-Class, and its springs and passive dampers are configured for comfort rather than sporty driving. The A250e offers an official electric-only range of 48 miles, although it was closer to 40 in our real-world testing. Mercedes has reworked the system with a new 11kW on-board AC charger that allows for a 10-100 per cent charge in 1hr 15mins. That was competitive for the PHEV's launch in 2020, but the class has progressed fast. Previously, the A250e used a 7.4kW on-board charger that. While the powertrain and battery are unchanged for this mid-life update, the charging speed has improved. On the WLTP cycle, Mercedes says the A250e can cover 44 electric-only miles before needing to be charged back up again. Meanwhile, the exhaust system ends at the centre of the car rather than at the rear bumper, while the silencer is housed in the transmission tunnel. Mercedes has had to shuffle various bits and pieces around to make way for the battery, so the fuel tank has been shifted backwards – taking up a bit of that boot space – and shrunk slightly to 35 litres. ![]() Power for the permanently excited synchronous electric motor is stored in a 16kWh (gross capacity) lithium ion battery that has been squeezed in beneath the rear seats. Together, these two sources of propulsion endow the A250e with a system output of 215bhp, while the electric motor’s 243lb ft of instantly available torque complements the 170lb ft the petrol engine develops at 1620-4000rpm. In terms of powertrain, for this A250e PHEV Mercedes has paired a 1.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine (which it developed with the Renault- Nissan Alliance) with a small electric motor, and they combine to drive the front wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. ![]() Black with yellow top was also available. Two special colors were offered, Turquoise Blue with dark blue top and Cortaro Red metallic with black top. For $10 more ($122 in 2022 dollars ) all leather seats were an option. Standard features included leather faced seats, simulated leather headliner, wool carpets, chrome-plated interior garnish moldings, two-toned dashboard, special black steering wheel, fender skirts, dual outside rearview mirrors, full wheelcovers & gold winged hood ornament. Montereys had either a canvas covered convertible for $2,146 ($26,102 in 2022 dollars ) or vinyl for $2,157 ($26,236 in 2022 dollars ). ![]() The Monterey (model 72C) was introduced in 1950 as a high-end two-door coupe as part of the Mercury Eight series in the same vein as the Ford Crestliner, the Lincoln Lido coupe and the Lincoln Cosmopolitan Capri coupe in order to compete with the hardtop coupes General Motors and Chrysler had introduced the previous model year. For 2004, the Monterey nameplate was revived, becoming the counterpart of the Ford Freestar minivan it was produced through the 2007 model year.Įarly history 1950 Mercury Monterey The only Mercury nameplate to be in continuous production throughout the 1960s, the Monterey was positioned above the Medalist, Custom, and Meteor later, it was positioned below the Turnpike Cruiser, Montclair, Park Lane, and finally the Marquis.įollowing the 1974 model year, Mercury discontinued the Monterey, consolidating its full-size range down to the Marquis and Colony Park station wagon. Over its 22 years of production, the Monterey served variously as the flagship, mid-range, and entry-level offering of the full-size Mercury product range. During its production, the Monterey would be offered in multiple body styles, ranging from coupes, convertibles, sedans, hardtops, and station wagons. These amps are designed for use at home, and some of them will sound very loud in smaller spaces. Most of the small guitar amps on this list come in under 10 watts, which is nowhere near enough to shine onstage. Unfortunately, a mini amp isn’t likely to have enough power for a live performance. Can I use a mini amp for live performances? It all depends on what you need for your practice regimen, so if you don’t use effects with your regular rig, you probably won’t miss them with your practice amp. Mini amps with effects are typically more expensive, whereas those without can often come in around or below the $/£50 mark. Usually you’ll find digital delay onboard, and sometimes an overdrive switch but as technology has advanced more modern offerings like the Spark Mini, Yamaha THR5, and Vox Mini GO 3 have started to include both amp models and effects. Most mini amps come with either a single effect or none. (Image credit: Future) Are there any mini amps with effects? If you find that you do need more volume and have a little more room to play with, take a look at our pick of the best desktop amps. They’re also much lower in volume, so less chance of annoying your neighbors or family trying than cranking your regular 2x12 tube amp. Rather than having to set up your whole rig each time you want to play, a mini amp lets you quickly plug in and get a great sound. Many mini amps also come with practice apps, which can include backing tracks to play along to, access to more effects or amp sounds, as well as tuners and metronomes. ![]() Many of the best small guitar amps feature recording outs, which means you can either use it as an audio interface in its own right or plug it into your existing rig. We use a mini amp on our desk, as it’s super easy to plug in and play when inspiration strikes. Most guitarists turn to small guitar amps when they need something to practice with whilst either saving space, or being easy to transport with them. What are the benefits of using a mini amp? That doesn’t mean you can’t get great sound out of them, many mini guitar amps use technologies like passive radiators to increase the volume, resulting in an amplifier that’s deceptively loud. Due to the smaller size, you’ll find they have less overall volume and fewer features as the speakers and cabinet need to be smaller in order for them to fit into your living space. Seriously though – turn it up over halfway with a humbucker-equipped guitar and watch the complaints come in from partners and family members. Thanks to the passive radiator located on the underside, this thing is stupendously loud. The sounds are outstanding quality and whether clean or high gain, this amp delivers such an incredibly vibrant and clear tone you’ll forget it’s coming from a tiny cabinet.
